Welcome to SPAAT

Mission Statement

The Student Program for Academic and Athletic Transitioning (SPAAT) is a nonprofit organization that empowers socially and economically disadvantaged high school student athletes by providing them with academic, community and athletic support services in an effort to increase the number of students entering postsecondary institutions.

Overview

Harold Pearson and Russell Crew founded SPAAT in 2002 in an effort to understand and help create solutions for increasing student performance, both inside the classroom and on the field of play. Best known as “old friends”, Harold and Russell attended middle and high school together in Sacramento. After graduating high school in 1996, both enrolled into college. Harold attended American River Community College for one year before transferring to the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business communications and played cornerback as a student-athlete for the Cal Bears. Russell attended the University of Washington in Seattle, earning a double major in sociology and society and justice. Together, they invite you to take special interest in their program and witness the development of a program that is not only committed to improving academic and athletic performance, but improving the overall quality of life among student-athletes.
